NW/NE 48th Street Bridge Weekly Update Week of Aug. 31-Sept. 7, 2026

Early Construction Work
NW 48th Street Bridge
  • Crews have completed demolition of three of the four bridge spans, with 62 of the 64 bridge beams now removed. Demolition operations will continue on the easternmost span, where crews will remove the two remaining overhead beams to complete the overhead demolition of the NW/NE 48th Street Bridge.
  • Following the completion of overhead demolition, crews will transition to demolition of the existing bridge foundations, including the pile caps and associated piles. Foundation demolition will continue within the S.R. 9/I-95 median and along the west side of the bridge. Within the median, crews will excavate around existing piles that conflict with the future bridge foundations to facilitate their removal. This phase of work is anticipated to take approximately two weeks. No additional full closures of S.R. 9/I-95 are anticipated for these demolition activities.
  • Once foundation demolition along the west side of the bridge is complete, crews will begin excavation of the existing retaining walls.
  • Crews will install a new temporary roadway lighting system to allow for the removal of existing lighting and continued demolition activities within the S.R. 9/I-95 median.
  • Following the removal of existing guardrail, sidewalks, and curbs on the east side of S.R. 9/I-95 at NW/NE 48th Street, crews will begin grading for the MSE wall foundation.
  • Construction of crane pads and preparations for upcoming pile driving operations will continue.
  • Temporary traffic control devices and lane closures will remain in place along S.R. 9/I-95 to safely accommodate construction activities while maintaining traffic flow.
  • Crews will continue monitoring and maintaining traffic control devices throughout the work zone to help safely guide motorists and pedestrians.
  • The northbound S.R. 9/I-95 Express Lanes between S.R. 816/Oakland Park Boulevard and S.R. 834/Sample Road will be closed to traffic nightly from 9 p.m. until 5:30 a.m., Sunday through Thursday, through Thursday, Oct. 1, for bridge demolition and construction operations. Motorists will be directed to exit the Express Lanes onto the general-purpose lanes at S.R. 816/Oakland Park Boulevard and may re-enter the Express Lanes north of S.R. 810/Hillsboro Boulevard.
